I was asked to take part of the Year-of-the-Staycation project with The Happy Housewife and many bloggers from across the web.
What is a Staycation? Per Wikipedia -"A staycation (also spelled stay-cation, stacation, or staykation; known in the United Kingdom as a stoliday or holistay) a period of time in which an individual or family stays and relaxes at home, or vacations in their own country, possibly taking day trips to area attractions."
Today I’m highlighting one location. Tomorrow, I will be sharing additional links to FREE or inexpensive travel destinations nationwide. Enjoy this, the Year-of-the-Staycation.

Blackwater Falls State Park, located near Canaan Valley Resort in West Virginia, is a wondrous free attraction. It’s the perfect day trip destination or stop off along your journey. My family and I manage to visit the falls at least once per year. We always wear comfy shoes and pack a picnic for the visit. Blackwater Falls is a great location for scenic, free, family fun!
Admission & Parking:
Free {and you can’t beat free}.
Free {and you can’t beat free}.
What to expect:
Upon arriving, you’ll find a spacious picnic and parking area with a gift-store and restrooms. You’ll also be very pleased to find a cleared trail leading down to a wooden stairway that walks you down to the magnificent falls.
There are several lookout points to stop and take in the scenery. There are also several large rocks a long the descent. We always stop for a picture.
“New Kids on the Rock!”
"Hello, from one of the overlooks!"
At the Falls:
A large area of decking allows you to stand only feet away from the rushing water. You’ll notice the waters have a dark appearance. The dark color is from the tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. These falls are one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.

Enjoying the falls.

This is wonderful! What a gorgeous place! How far away are you guys from Virginia? We are a homeschooling family as well! Just started up this past year and are loving it! We also are new believers and started going to church recently. You have a great blog, think I may have to follow yours! I did the Staycation challenge as well, mine was Virginia Beach.

Jerri,
It’s nice to “meet” you too! We live in Virginia {use to live in Hampton Roads near you!}. I travel often through WV and thought Blackwater Falls would be a good location to highlight,–for its beauty and “free-ness.”
SO GLAD about your new salvation and church going! Jesus is the best, ever. Thanks for sharing!!!
God Bless you and yours. I’ll be sure to check out your VABeach listings!

I'm a WV native and love visiting Blackwater Falls. My parents honeymooned there 45 years ago!
I live in Pittsburgh and enjoyed a visit to Blackwater Falls in the winter a few years ago. The park has lots of hiking trails that were gorgeous in the snow. One of these days I'll get back there in the spring, summer, or fall; I'm sure it's beautiful in all seasons!
Also in your area, my family and I enjoyed a day in Wheeling this spring. Lots to see and do there!
